Thermal Engineer (f/m/d)
About Satellogic
Satellogic is a vertically integrated Earth Observation satellite and data company. We design, manufacture, and operate our own fleet of satellites, the Aleph-1 constellation, which delivers high-frequency, high-resolution imagery plus full-motion video.
Earth Observation imagery and data are key to monitoring change at scale, informing critical decisions, and ultimately helping solve the world’s most pressing problems. Our mission is to democratize access to this information, making it affordable and available for those who need it across a wide range of industries, from climate monitoring and agriculture, to energy, infrastructure and many more. We want to do our part in building a world where every organization is prepared for the challenges of tomorrow.
With a team of around 150 employees spanning 5 countries, Satellogic is a diverse group of purpose-driven professionals across software development, satellite engineering, operations, data science, manufacturing, and sales. We are excited to welcome team members who push the limits, get things done, and never stop learning—all while being humble, honest, and empathetic.
About the team
Our Thermal Engineering team is responsible for the design, analysis, and verification of the satellite's thermal control systems. This includes managing heat dissipation from electronic components, maintaining optimal operating temperatures for sensitive instruments, and protecting the spacecraft from extreme space environments.
The team works at the intersection of thermal design, analysis, and testing, collaborating closely with the Mechanical and Structural teams to deliver high-performance, space-qualified hardware. From early-stage concept design through to final integration and thermal vacuum testing, we take a hands-on approach to engineering, ensuring our systems are robust, efficient, and aligned with the company's production and mission timelines..
Key responsibilities of the team include:
- Definition of thermal spacecraft requirements, verification & validation plans
- Designing thermal control systems, including radiators, heat pipes, multi-layer insulation (MLI), and heaters.
- Developing detailed thermal models and performing simulations using industry-standard software (e.g., Thermal Desktop, SINDA/FLUINT).
- Defining thermal interfaces and ensuring proper integration with other satellite subsystems.
- Working closely with mechanical and structural teams to ensure proper system integration and manufacturability.
- Supporting manufacturing and AIT (Assembly, Integration, and Testing) teams during integration and thermal vacuum testing of the satellites.
- Continuously improving thermal design methodologies and product reliability based on flight heritage and manufacturing feedback.
We value engineers who combine technical expertise with a collaborative mindset and a strong attention to detail. The work we do has a direct impact on mission success—and we're looking for people who are ready to make that impact.
The team is always learning and trying to push the limits, relying in part on the large diversity of people’s profiles and backgrounds.
About the position
We are seeking a Thermal Engineer with a strong technical background and experience in thermal design and analysis to join our Thermal Engineering team. The role requires functional design and thermal control criteria, with practical knowledge of thermal engineering principles and best practices in the aerospace industry. You will work closely with the entire Mechanical Department, absorbing know-how and leveraging capabilities.
The position has strong growth potential, with the potential to assume greater responsibilities in the future within the Mechanical Design area.
Location
Remote work from anywhere between UTC-5 and UTC+3 time zones. Satellogic’s office locations include Buenos Aires, Barcelona, Montevideo, Cordoba (ARG)
Willingness and ability to travel domestically and/or internationally to company offices, laboratories, client sites, potential clients, or suppliers as needed. This role will also require travel to our laboratory in Uruguay.
Responsibilities
- Design and analyze thermal control systems and components.
- Develop detailed thermal models and perform simulations using industry-standard software..
- Apply good design for thermal control (DFT) practices, especially in the aerospace context.
- Integrate thermal requirements and interfaces in accordance with industry standards and regulations.
- Work as a team with the structural and mechanical design departments to ensure an integrated and consistent design.
- Document thermal analyses, generate technical reports, and keep the PLM/CAD system up to date with thermal data.
- Collaborate and learn from the rest of the team to align with the company's standards and design philosophy.
About you - Requirements
- Degree in Mechanical/Aeronautical Engineering or a related field with a specialization in Heat Transfer or Thermal Engineering.
- Proven experience with 3+ years in thermal design and analysis, preferably in the aerospace industry.
- Proficiency in thermal analysis software (e.g., Simcenter, Thermal Desktop, ANSYS Thermal).
- Knowledge of manufacturing design and production processes relevant to thermal components (e.g. heat pipes, radiators, MLI).
- Knowledge of common practices in the aerospace industry (a plus: spacecraft thermal control design and testing).
- Ability to work in a team, strong interpersonal communication skills, and a willingness to learn.
- Previous experience in the aerospace, defense or high-precision industries will be a plus.
- Experience in opto-thermal analysis will be a plus.
